Coach Bill's Video Evaluation: Archie Goodwin

Each day this week, former college basketball coach and Tar Heel Times contributor, Coach Bill, will offer his insights into several of UNC's top-rated basketball recruits. Today he analyzes 2012 shooting guard prospect Archie Goodwin (6-5, 185, Little Rock AR).

As an evaluator watching Archie Goodwin, what resonates quickly is how long (wing span) and rangy he is on both ends of the court. He has a chance to be a terrific open-court performer, not only as a scorer and finisher but also as a playmaker. He has a great balance of combining an aggressive attack mentality to the rim with the acumen to unselfishly find teammates for layups.

Archie is one of the most versatile perimeter players in the 2012 class. At 6'5", he offers "combo guard" capability at the next level because of his above average ball-handling skills and passing ability, while also possessing a multi-dimensional scoring arsenal. He is a relentless slasher, acrobatic layup finisher, and easily plays above the rim with his good "hops" and long arms.

Goodwin is a pretty good three-point shooter, who I believe will only get better with his solid stroke and insatiable work ethic. He also displays a burgeoning mid-range capacity. He already is productive scoring over smaller and same-size defenders with a pretty efficient jump hook. He is a consistent threat on the offensive boards. He is a very reliable free throw shooter (especially at the end of games). He usually gets to the free throw line with volume due to his aggressive, slashing mentality, shifty handle and unorthodox body control that at times draws the favor of referees.

Switching to the defensive end, Goodwin offers very good potential as an on-ball defender because of his appetite to dictate, quickness and length. Off the ball, his quickness, length and aggressive mentality allows him to be a legitimate threat in the passing lanes and contesting shots. His quickness and size allow him to potentially guard three positions. He also has become a pretty accomplished "chase down" shot-blocker in defensive transition (a la Lebron James).

Not only does Goodwin's elite-level versatility allow him to be a terrific college prospect...but he is also extremely coachable and a big-time competitor.
