Butch Davis, speed pioneer

Rarely does an individual or a group of individuals have the wherewithal to actually change how a sport is played. Yet UNC coach Butch Davis was among those who did when he was a defensive line coach at the University of Miami in the 1980s. Until then, the Wishbone offense had been nearly indefensible when Oklahoma ran it with such superb athletes. Defenses were built with size and strength in mind to stop the running game inside the tackles.
