Although the recent college basketball trend has been toward destination tournaments, usually televised and marketed by ESPN, it wasn't that long ago that the Tar Heels made a regular trip to the Queen City as part of the Tournament of Champions, which was first played in 1988 and lasted, in some form, through three Carolina head coaches and parts of three decades.
