Bill Guthridge was not Dean Smith. What made him so valuable to the North Carolina Tar Heels was that he never tried to be. Smith’s top assistant coach for 30 years, who also led Carolina to two Final Fours in his three years as head coach, died Tuesday after battling an assortment of health issues. He was 77.
