On Bill Guthridge, loyalty, and friendship

For three decades, Bill Guthridge was at Dean Smith’s side as they led UNC to 10 NCAA Final Fours and to national prominence as a basketball powerhouse. Then, after Smith retired just before the 1997 season, he led them to two Final Fours himself in a brief three-year stint as head coach. As friends recalled Guthridge’s remarkable legacy of loyalty and service, a theme emerged.
