Win -- at what cost?

For the second time in four years, North Carolina's Educational Foundation is embarking on a multimillion-dollar fundraising drive to supplement the salary of a new coach -- a move that raises questions about the role of boosters, and big money, in intercollegiate athletics. "No employee of a university should be beholden to some group outside of the university," said Murray Sperber, a professor emeritus at Indiana University and a leading authority on the role of college sports. "You look at the chain of command as to whose boss is whose, and it's not supposed to be the Rams." (Raleigh News & Observer)
