UNC Honors Top Ten Scholar-Athletes
UNC has announced the winners of this year's Top 10 Scholar-Athlete awards, recognizing seniors who have maintained the highest cumulative grade point averages while representing UNC as a member of a varsity team. The recognitions go to the top five men and top five women. This year's honorees carry a combined average GPA of 3.91. (

UNC Student-Athlete Advisory Council creates voter registration initiative
Despite the uncertainty concerning many details of their upcoming sports seasons, UNC athletes are still finding a way to make their mark. This fall, an athlete-led voter initiative is working toward 100 percent voter registration among eligible athletes on UNC's 28 varsity sports teams. The project is organizing a voter registration drive. (

UNC athletes had a Saturday march on Franklin Street
Sean May, the director of basketball operations for men’s basketball, said he learned of the march when
Garrison Brooks texted the team’s group chat. May said he stayed off to the side, but wanted to show support with his presence. “I thought it was super powerful that that many young people get together at the spur of the moment for something that is bigger than them,” May said. (

Tar Heels Gain From ACC Summer Development Program
Eleven Tar Heels participated in the ACC's Professional Development Academy over the summer, gaining valuable experience during a time when many plans were derailed by COVID-19. The six-week virtual program gave each participant the opportunity to forge new connections, learn from a range of speakers, and develop personal and career goals. (

UNC Fencer Jackie Litynski Nominated for 2020 NCAA Woman of the Year Award
Jackie Litynski, who graduated from North Carolina in May after four years on the fencing team, is UNC's nominee for the 2020 NCAA Woman of the Year Award. The honor was established in 1991 to recognize graduating female student-athletes who distinguished themselves in academics, athletics, service, and leadership during their college careers. (

Seventeen Tar Heel Teams Exceed National APR Average
Seventeen UNC varsity athletics teams exceeded the national average for the past four years in the NCAA's Academic Progress Rates and 13 squads posted perfect 1000s in 2018-19. The APRs released today include single-year scores for 2018-19 and four-year rates that reflect scores from the 2015-16, 2016-17, 2017-18 and 2018-19 academic years. (
