More info from Coach Bill's conversation with Shabazz Muhammad's father
Posted Feb 19, 2011
Tar Heel Times contributor Coach Bill (Twitter | Web site) followed up yesterday's post regarding Shabazz Muhammad with more information regarding the 2012 UNC shooting guard target:
After another conversation with Shabazz Muhammad's father, Ron Holmes, it is very clear that he and Shabazz would like to work away from the theme, notion, or perspective that Shabazz is all about wanting or needing to be a "two-guard" in college.
Not only with college coaches, but also with media and fans, they would prefer to focus on Shabazz just being considered a "player" who is willing to play any position a coach needs and will embrace the opportunity to display his versatility.
From a UNC reference, one of the examples we discussed was Jerry Stackhouse and his sophomore year under Dean Smith. We not only discussed how Shabazz is "similar" to Stackhouse in athleticism, skills, versatility and demeanor, but also how Stackhouse played primarily as a "4" his sophomore year next to Rasheed Wallace and how Jerry embraced it and worked all over the floor exploiting mismatches. We also touched on how that season's role certainly did not effect Jerry's draft stock or his long NBA career.
Once again, today's lengthy conversation was an example of how Mr. Holmes and Shabazz really "get it" in terms of overall perspective and how he is a special young player, young man and overall recruit.
